The EU has a tough nut to crack

EU negotiations on the AI Act are ongoing, focusing on regulating entry-level models and general-purpose AI. The Council, Parliament and the EU Commission participate. Initial proposals suggested gradual regulation for more powerful AI models, but Germany, France and Italy prefer self-regulation to protect their domestic AI companies, complicating the legislative process. The European Commission proposed a compromise, which was met with resistance, especially from Parliament. This conflict could delay or torpedo the legislative process, challenging the EU's ambitions to regulate AI.

Lots of discussion, little specifics. A classic case where instead of clear and decisive actions, we have a conflict of interests and endless negotiations. A prime example of how difficult it is to reach a compromise when each country tries to protect its own backyard. If only this compromise wouldn't end in embarrassment...

A cure for cancer?

Absci Corporation has partnered with AstraZeneca to create an AI-designed antibody to treat cancer. They leverage Absci's Integrated Drug Creation™ platform and AstraZeneca's experience in oncology to accelerate the development of new anticancer drugs. Absci technology combines AI with laboratory technologies, allowing for rapid antibody validation. Absci's goal is to increase efficiency in drug development, optimizing their properties and expanding the range of therapeutic targets.

Let's hope they actually find this miracle cancer drug. However, let's hope they don't set a prohibitive price for it.

AI at work

There is a growing demand for AI skills at work, especially in areas that use tools like ChatGPT. AI, as Nadia Alaee from Deel emphasizes, streamlines administrative tasks and increases productivity. Generative AI is key in many sectors, and LinkedIn is seeing an increase in AI-related job postings. There are concerns about gaps in employees' technical skills to effectively use AI. AI is used in tasks such as copywriting, software development and employee evaluations, but human input is needed to personalize and avoid bias.

Will AI also replace reading comprehension, since it already replaces so many traditional job skills?
