Sam Altman, OpenAI's chief executive, is in talks with investors and manufacturers around the world to create a network of chip factories. The goal is to reduce OpenAI's dependence on expensive Nvidia chips, which are currently in short supply and cost up to $30,000 each. Nvidia, the maker of GPUs for the largest AI models, including OpenAI's GPT-4, has gained a market value of nearly $1.5 trillion. Altman is counting on its own chip production to significantly reduce OpenAI's costs, given that Nvidia's H100 chip costs $3,320 to produce.

Not surprisingly, Altman is looking for new solutions, since Nvidia employees are already so rich from the jump in Nvidia's stock price that they lack the motivation to work, so chip availability is also lower.
