War in the age of AI

The development of autonomous weapons systems and cyber warfare is changing the face of warfare around the world. However, despite technological advances, the fundamental causes of conflict remain constant, and the use of AI on the battlefield raises ethical as well as practical dilemmas, such as the difficulty of distinguishing civilians from soldiers and the consequences of cyber attacks on critical infrastructure. AI's impact on war also has broader implications, as it can redefine the nature of conflicts, changing the way they are perceived and potentially leading to conflicts with minimal human involvement.

Supercomputer

Researchers at Western Sydney University, in collaboration with Intel and Dell, are developing the DeepSouth supercomputer, which simulates the neural networks of the human brain. The machine, capable of performing 228 trillion synaptic operations per second, matches the speed of the human brain. DeepSouth uses a neuromorphic system that mimics biological processes, and is more efficient and less energy-intensive than traditional supercomputers. The supercomputer could revolutionize fields such as sensors, biomedicine, robotics and AI, enabling the development of advanced smart devices and energy-efficient AI models.
