😱 AI Carbon Footprint
Does AI absorb that much energy ❓ ❗️

AI carbon footprint
A new study by Hugging Face and Carnegie Mellon University reveals that image generation using AI uses as much energy as needed to fully charge a smartphone. Text generation is less energy-intensive, using only 16% of the smartphone's charge per 1,000 text generations. The study highlights the significant carbon footprint of AI tasks, particularly image generation, which is much more energy and carbon intensive than text generation. This is the first study to quantify the carbon emissions associated with using AI models for various tasks. The results highlight the importance of using less energy-intensive, task-specific AI models to reduce carbon emissions.
So now, in addition to charging my smartphone, I have to worry about the carbon footprint of every meme I create? Cool…
Q hallucinations
Amazon's new AI chatbot, Q, faces accuracy and privacy issues. Employees are afraid of leaking confidential data, and the chatbot generates incorrect information and legal advice. Amazon denies security issues and continues to refine Q ahead of its full rollout.
Could Q stand for "Questionable"? Well, at least we're not surprised that another chatbot joins the ranks of "fabricators".
AI computers
AI is evolving into a consumer technology, with an emphasis on processing data directly on user devices rather than in the cloud. Intel, Apple and Qualcomm are developing "AI computers" that are supposed to run faster and guarantee greater privacy. New technologies like Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips and Apple's offline Siri point to a growing trend of AI processing directly on devices. This shift in the approach to AI highlights the importance of local, efficient and private data processing.
Is this a breakthrough in AI or another marketing gimmick? “AI computers” sound impressive, but will they actually deliver the promised privacy and performance?
